Sept. 30, 2009: Voices for Justice: 200 Years of Latino Newspapers in the United States
Join Dean Ernest J. Wilson III for an exhibit opening and panel discussion that will bring to life the people and stories in the forgotten pages of U.S. Latino newspapers since 1808. The program includes an exhibit showcasing key Latino newspapers and journalists; and a lively discussion exploring the past, present and growing future of U.S. Latinos and their media. Panelists include Mónica Lozano, publisher and CEO of La Opinión, the nations largest Spanish-language daily newspaper; Nicolás Kanellos, University of Houston professor and author of Hispanic Periodicals in the United States, and documentary filmmaker and winner of three Emmys, Ray Telles. The panel will be moderated by Félix F. Gutiérrez, professor of journalism, communication and American studies and ethnicity at USC, and a Latino media journalist and scholar for more than 40 years. This event is organized by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and is co-sponsored by the Annenberg Latino Student Association, El Centro Chicano and the Department of American Studies and Ethnicity.
