"Why Not Me" is such a sad, sad song. And apparently Ms. Hyman was a sad, sad person. R.I.P.

and the black stations started playing their songs starting with One Less Bell to Answer. They became increasingly known as they deserved. I have read "Strength of a Woman" and bottom line she sabotaged a lot of opportunities perhaps after being so overlooked she built a wall sort of speak. The Phyllis Hyman I see in interviews and videos - especially the one with Angela Bofill was a beautiful down to earth, funny, non perfect human being.

to the disorder. I am sure she knew she was as good or even better voice wise as many of the other singers and that had to play on her psyche. I enjoyed her music when she first started recording and did not understand why she was not more popular. That said - I had no ideal until recently that she had recorded much more than I was aware. There was a time the Fifth Dimensions were not played on "soul, black" station and I wrote a letter to a "soul, black" station and it was read on air

Her many fans should have demanded more airplay from the radio stations. Her records should have been #1 hits and she should have went gold. Her voice was genuinely a gift from GOD - what with no training or any form of education to put such depth in her songs. On that note I believe she may have been blackballed. That may have contributed to her being too aggressive and being on the defensive. That may have increased the affects of the bipolar disorder. Perhaps that may be what led to
let's practice being forthright speaking our approval instead of after a person is gone. I suspect she would have marvelled in knowing she was so well thought of. Perhaps she may not have been on the defensive so much had she only known. I believe that and her feeling a failure with the drugs/weight/, and not getting recognition she so deserved (sososo deserved) may have helped her realize her value and may have sought help. I wish she had people to lean on during her dismay.

@vmccarty1055 Yes...from what I could tell, Phyllis was extremely down to earth and very well thought of indeed. I wish she would have received the recognition that she deserved while at the height of her career...perhaps she would have still been here with us today to enjoy her own legacy. Phyllis struck me as a person who believed in being in charge of her career and personal desires, but towards the end, I think she might have felt that she was somehow not fulfilling her own vision.

@ 2:36 it really looks like she's saying "And my heart needs to know... Why Not Me". I don't know if that was intentional or not but that clip was pretty spot on with the lyrics.
