I fuckin' love this cd. It stays in rotation in my carousel. Yellowjackets & Jeff Lorber (Wizard Island, Water Sign Lorber) are some of my favorite relaxing tunes....
Jimmy Haslip is amazing. This is possibly the most catchy fusion song of all time. Saw them live with my friend a few months ago. It was kinda weird that we were the only 16 year olds there but whatever :P
@fardrum absolutely-that could very well be the issue-yes Gadd is mechanical but what funk pattern doesn't sound slightly metronomic in the application...I agree, music 'ain't no math' although counting is usually involved :-) But, there is nothing wrong with conversation/interaction to not only exchange ideas but to continue education via another's opinion and experiences...God Bless! :-)
@cleancomedy nothing wrong with having dissimilar impressions, music ain't no math ;-) I mentioned Gadd because my definition of stiff would adapt to him, if ever, more than to Peter. I still think the perceived stiffness in this video is caused more by the low quality of the equalization. Erskine Drums litterally don't breath as usual here..
@fardrum I am quite clear of webster's version of defining stiff and mechanical...my use of them is relative to what I hear in Pete's playing....I have been a drummer for over 30yrs have played everything from drum & bugle corps to classical...I know drummers who can sight read and play anything, but it lacks 'life' I'm sure we all know guys that can play circles around people, but can't read at all-not saying that about Pete, just saying he sounds mechanical. Gadd is great, you ompared them.
@cleancomedy stiff and mechanical? I think our dictionaries don't agree on the very definitions of those terms....Let's make a distinction between what we hear and what's actually played.
I agree Erskine drums sound a bit too dry on this, too much attack while the others are loaded with reverb, too much reverb. But to call his playing stiff... that's a bit of an exageration. I'd be afraid to hear your opinion on Gadd's drumming.. ;-). I skip on the mechanical part...
@bangindamusic84 How many great painters are there? How many are called masters? Do all have the same following? Maybe if you spent some time indulging in other things besides defending Peter's honor, you might open your eyes to the multitude of other "masters" in the myriad of musical genre, if Peter is stiff and mechanical in his style, that is my perception--you can't advise me into seeing him otherwise. he may be a master, but other masters are better and more fluid in their style.
@cleancomedy Oh, sorry. I think I misread your post. From what I understand, you know who Peter Erskine is, but don't have enough respect for him, or enough intelligence yourself, to come up with a legitimate, specific explanation for why you don't like his performance. Now that, I'd be interested to hear, because I actually agree that *Erskine sounds best in a more traditional style*.
*See how I did that there? I shared my thoughts without insulting one of the great players of our time.
@cleancomedy I just think it's amusing that first you defend your statement by attacking my drumming/musical ability(?), and only after that do you bother to find out who the hell the guy is. Peter Erskine is a master of the instrument and of the music. Think whatever you want about a performance, but please, next time do a little research before you make such a statement. I'm saying this for your own sake. When you say things like your first statement, you sound stupid.
@bangindamusic84 Lol, if that was all you had to say...you wouldn't have sent that reply! I researched Peter, he has some skill-I personally don't think he was a good fit for the Jackets (old). Why do you think the song he played on was called "Father Time?!"
Hey the guy gigged with Weather Report during one of the most important times
in the History of jazz Fusion! He has impeccable Time which is Crucial when you are performing complex tunes like the jackets do. Check out his playing on
8:30 with Jaco. magnificent interplay. Peter has Nothing to Prove!
@bangindamusic84 Very mature response...Obviously you know nothing about music-especially drums Erskine never recorded with the Jackets and didn't last a year, he can play-for me he doesn't add much to the jackets overall sound....my opinion is mine...you probably can't play anything but videos! :-)

Fusion jazz is the king of music and this song testifies to its greatness... why doesn't everyone play this way?

@defribilatorvideos
that two 16-year-olds were at their show is SO uplifting for me.
these guys are great and, honestly, I like Erskine with them more than any other drummer they've had; he's more subtle a player.
16... ****ing awesome, young man. YES !!!

It's like Erskine was called in for this gig, nevertheless he's using all of his skills to make it sound right. Great effort though.

I think from reading the comments below we probably agree that Erskine and the Yellowjackets are just not the right fit.

@cleancomedy Opinions are like assholes. For me Peter smokes Gadd at anything. And he's again great in here.

@cleancomedy could we at least agree that the following is not stiff playing? :
Look on youtube for:
André CECCARELLI invite Baptiste TROTIGNON & Darryl HALL "Footprints" part 1
Just to calibrate our definitions ;-)
