Billie Holiday did not write "Strange Fruit". It was written by a Dewitt Clinton high school teacher in NY. I believe his pen name was Lewis Allen. He was not black.

This song was written for his wife, Laura Duncan, an African American vocalist. This song has been covered by many musicians over the years. Some sing it as a song and it sounds too flowery. It should be handled with reverence...as a musical prayer. Singing each "swinging Black body" into peaceful eternal rest.

@lindamoggioable Abel Meeropol was Lewis Allan's real name. Abel was not black but he was Jewish, and he was a teacher, he wrote the poem (then turned it into a song) after seeing a picture of a lynching of two black men.
