Please send emails to complain about these poisonings and the plight of the strays to the addresses given below, in particular to the two mayors on Salamina.

18 helpless dogs killed by poison in their own backyard, and 6 still at the vets, hopefully who will survive, August 2009

What you see here today, is an everyday situation in Salamina, and the brutality here has no end.

There are estimated to be over 4,000 strays on the island, which is not known to any tourist or anyone wanting to visit Greece, there is wide spread hunger, most dogs have mange, are suffering from starvation, and if this is not enough, they get shot, hit and poisoned daily.

In this case, 40 small sized dogs lived with a family, in Kakia Vigla, an area which is not very inhabited. The dogs were well looked after, they had the run of the house with a very large garden, they were vaccinated, and we had started sterilizing, the old people loved them, and cared for them. They bothered no one, and yet someone threw poison directly into the garden.

The founder of the local organisation, and the only one who is capable, rushed to the house, she always has a large amount of atropine at home. 18 died, but she saved the rest, 6 are still at the vets. We can only try to imagine what went on there, and the trauma experienced by this poor lady trying to save so many dying dogs.

The "human being" suspected of this crime is known to the police and has a criminal record.

Will the authorities take action?

This is a quote from Aesop's ANIMAL RESCUE:

"Dear all, We are appalled, disgusted by the act of these cretins, sub human beasts who had no respect for any life and of course the effort of the people who took care of these animals. Can the Greeks ever join the civilized world? Can the Greeks have some respect for any life besides their own? Can the Greek government ever punish the guilty? We did build a great museum in Athens but then what? Hundreds of animals are poisoned daily all over Greece. Here in the Kavala area three weeks ago we had the agonizing death of the dog dragged by a 4x4, 8 poisonings today in Amigdaleonas, more in Zarkadia and these are only a few that we know of. Last Jan. we lost 36 strays in the village of New Peramos Kavala and the list goes on. Imathia, Salamina etc. etc.

The other day I heard the antinomarchi Hanion talking about cultural events in his area. What a joke...

Where is our culture, where is our dignity, our respect for life?

I, as a Greek, ask all of those who can come in touch with European newspapers to do so and I am always willing to speak up about this cruel, inhuman, treatment of animals in my country.

  • This has been taken way out of proportion mostly by women who only care for cute animals. Many are racists and are looking for excuses to bash Greece. Rational people would first condemn Grizzly trophy hunting in North America or the Canadian seal hunt. Just enter "bear hunting" in Youtube and take a look at the wonderful videos that turn up. Oh, and let's not forget dolphin killing in Denmark or PETA's videos on animal farming.

  • @Atromitos888 What a silly ignorant little man you are!! You are either one of those totally in denial greeks or else live in a box and have no idea what is happening ALL over Greece, even in idyllic little islands like Telendos. Nowhere in Greece is untainted with animal abuse. We know stuff goes on in the rest of the world but nothing compared with Greece (apart from China) and you should google hunting in Greece, you will be even more shocked, also here on youtube terrible videos of boars.

  • There is a woman on my friends list on myspace that is going to Greece,I have shown her pics and footage of wot happens to the strays and she got on the defensive saying she is aware of the abuse but why would I want to ruin her upcoming cruise to Greece, well, heeeeello, why do ye think?

  • Sadly, there are a lot of people like that, it is called "in denial" It is estimated that around 80 percent of the greek population suffer from this as well as people outside of greece, I know a few english like that. Fortunately about 10 percent of greeks are animal lovers and well the rest, they are the abusers.

  • If I ever must return to the country of my birth while this is going on - well all I can say is that I will step forward to yet again do whatever I can to bring an end to this cruetly :( I hand my head in shame and cry tears of blood for these animals and for those who work so hard to help them !

  • You should hold your head with pride not shame, that you do so much for animals. I could not return as I would either end up in a mental institution or prison for murder!

  • Tis already done askalice50!

  • killian, i'd get rid of this woman on myspace and tell her why. Does the suffering of the voiceless get in the way of her good time? She's aware of the abuse and she's going anyway? Fuck her.

  • will you find me a road or lane called Aminoy in Salamina or Salamis?

  • @Atromitos888 WE dont have Dolphins in Denmark for christ sake. What you are talking about are the idiotic people on the Faroe Island who are killing walls as a sport each year.. Denmark dosnt have a damn thing to do about it..

  • @Atromitos888 excuses excuses excuses.. AS I wrote before.. In your mind, because animal abuse is taking place all over the world, then its perfectly OK that its going on in Greece also.. Greeks have all chances to defend themselfs, but they choose not to, mostly, and if they finally do, its a load of bla bla and poor excuses, just like the ones you are coming up with. YOU need to check your facts.. And maybe you should try to do some rescue work. IT might make you wake up and smell the sunlight

  • @RhodosTina

Have you been to redneck America to see how nicely wildlife is being treated under the misleading title of "sports hunting"? Probably not because it isn't a free party like Greece. Besides, in the US people speak English and can defend themselves against attacks. Not like in Greece where English isn't the primary language and most wouldn't know that those cute beach girls with the beer bottle are doing bad missionary work.

  • You need to check your facts – and face up to the appalling record of animal cruelty, abuse and willful poisoning that take place all over Greece. Check the EU figures Greece has the WORST figures per ca-pita in Europe for animal abuse. As for your mention on animal farming – Greece ignores all EU legislation with regard to farm animals, transportation, confinement, health – your country is very happy to take grants and EU money but it fails miserably in its commitment to animal welfare.

  • @Atromitos888 Yet another Greek who use thos poor excuse "There is animal abuse all over the world, so its accepted it happens in Greece".. I wanna throw up.. Wake up honey!!!!!!!! This is no ATTACK on Greece.. Do you have any idea how many tourist Greece lose each year, because they witness the constant abuse there?? What else do Greece have to live of? Surely not products ect. Greece is f... without the tourists!!!

  • @kakos67 Well, it actually suprices me that no more greek woman do so, looking at the quality of men which are avalible here in Greece!!!!!!!!!!!!!
