Drinking or using anything is often but a symptom. I think alcohol abuse is a mental illness in itself. Not a character defect, not a spiritual failure.

I am so happy I found LifeRing. Since AA (I had thought) was my only choice...I went to AA and struggled like hell... off and on for years to fit. I failed miserably at AA, and thus thought I was doomed, I was already as low as I could get but to fail at AA? A death sentence. BS I was not doomed after all. LifeRing told me I wasn't and I have been sober for 2 yrs.since. I wonder how many others were & are like I was? Doomed. I no longer need ongoing support i.e.alcohol is just not an option.
