  • they are covering leadbelly...keep it real...the shout is notable from the brothers version

  • You are absolutely right, thanks for your comment... I'll give credit in the title to both artists. AS it turns out this song is covered in one of only three live clips of the legend.

    best wishes,

    Rick

  • what do you mean by the last sentence?

  • There is a wonderful short film of Leadbelly performing 3 songs, circa 1945. "Take this Hammer" is one of the three songs. I found it in Youtube following your correction.

    Many thanks,

    Rick

  • nice clip

  • I will be posting many more videos of FRFF 2008 over the next week. I have several more videos from the post-storm circle coming soon... an amazing closing to the festival that only a few handful of us were able to enjoy... I intend to post it all for my fellow FRFF family!!!

    Enjoy,

  • The shout comes from the fact that this is a chain-gang song. Leadbelly spent four years at Angola Prison Farm in Lousiana, where prisoners performed slave labor that made (and still make) millions of dollars in profit for the State. The rhythmic shouts were used by the songleader-prisoner to mark time in the song as well as in the work the gang was doing, such as swinging hoes, pickaxes, etc. Original versions of these songs (such as Alan Lomax's Parchman Farm recordings) are chilling...

  • legal

  • I have since learned the truth...thanks.

  • Actually, not really. The 'shout' is from to the original leadbelly version. (see also Big Bill or pete seeger's versions). The felice brothers have a good version tho.

  • hey rick!
