Steam locomotive action in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota featuring a cab ride aboard the Black Hills Central Railroad, running between Hill City and Keystone, South Dakota. This is a 2-6-2T logging locomotive built in 1926 for the Silver Falls Timber Company. It's a rough-riding, very loud little locomotive! The date is July 22, 1992.
We start out with several views of the locomotive at Hill City, then a few shots from the train as it heads down the line to Keystone Junction. Once 104 moves around its cars, we board the locomotive for the ride back to Hill City. We see the engineer and fireman in action as they take the train up the 4%-6% grades on the Keystone spur, with the engine working at full capacity. It was a very loud ride!
In 1999 the Black Hills Central obtained a larger locomotive, 2-6-6-2T No. 110, and today No. 104 serves primarily as backup power during the summer season. At the time this video was made in 1992, it was the only operable steam locomotive on the BHC roster.
I love these old Baldwin Steamers.
