Surrounded by music since she was a small child, twenty-three year old singer, songwriter and composer Chrisette Michele has been blessed with an old soul and this Long Island bred songwriter and vocalist has a deep appreciation for the harmonic foundations that includes gospel and jazz. "I did my first solo when I was four years old," Chrisette remembers.

The truth is, no matter how painful it is for me to admit it, I was sick. I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and began the regiment of peritoneal dialysis at 30 years old. I experienced frustration because my mind would tell me one thing, but due to the illness, my body just could not respond. I remember frequent vomiting, cramping in my legs, arms, hands and rib cage, headaches, and general body weakness. Often I would sleep for hours during the day and there was a period when my bed was my best friend. There were also many nights of insomnia where I had to pray myself asleep quoting Psalms 4:8. During the last 16 months of this battle, I remember an overactive parathyroid, which caused crippling effects and a limp. Throughout this illness God gave me songs that inspired my spirit and brought me peace and hope. I promised God when my healing was manifested I would share the songs so that others too could be comforted by God's whispers of strength and encouragement.

  • amazing story, i would love to help in someway or another... this story hits home, i have been on dailysis for about over a year now

  • I am 48 and just found out I have pkd. I am optimistic and hope to be able to survive to see my kids graduate and get married. I will be going to see my specialist on july 30 and will learn much more about my progression. I found out due to acute appendicitus. I have some minor pain in the lower back and sides, but not much. My sides go cold from time to time...I never heard of this as a symptom though. Thanks for inspiration! I don't think i need dialysis yet
