350+, as the designated top speed of 956 is 355kph . Furthermore,
the later group C cars were going way over 380kph. ;)

the old version without chicanes was so much better

Wow, that was awesome. I've driven on Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, etc, but this track is amazing. I would love to drive it. Albeit a little slower. My nuts aren't that big.

@llandudnoboy If any of these books has the name "Ian Bamsey" cited as the author, I'd be suspicious. He's been responsible for some fairly outlandish claims over the years and I have evidence of it - two articles in one book! Otherwise, well, not having seen what you've read I can't make any call on it. Maybe you could provide your sources for me. I may not be able to find them though.

Having read reliable books on both Porche 966 and the 962 variants in the CanAm race series where 956 cars competed the works cars were pushing out close to 1400bhp from their engines.
I do not know a great deal about the history and development of the earlier 917 so i cannot reliably comment on how powerfull their v12 engines became but photographs in the history of the Porche 956 actually show the super powerfull 1000+ hp engines being assembled in the factory.

@llandudnoboy I think you'd have a hard time finding a 917/30 with 1400hp. I don't know what they ran in qualifying and they probably don't either but it was just about impossible to run them at above 1100 in race trim. That is still a colossal amount of power. Beyond that point it's almost a pissing contest (something motor sport seems notorious for!).
Porsche have never claimed otherwise. As I said, the limitation was the crankcase.

No the Le Man 956 racers were pushing out around 670hp but when the Porche 956 competed in the CanAm series in America some of those 12cylinder engines were developing over1400hp.
The engine was always tailored to the track and race the car was entered into.
The final drive differentials chosen for Le Man were also crucial for outright speed with acceleration out of the tight corners that LeMan is famous for.

@fliparoo1234 Not even close.
No Le Mans car has ever produced that much power. Never. You're confusing this with the 917 Can Am car which was "only" good for 1100, though it pulled more than that on the test bech. It couldn't be done on the track because of crank case flex.
"the 956 still hold the fastest le mans record"
Which record are you referring to? Not for distance (917 until last year) and not for top speed either (Peugeot in 1989, 405 kmh). Lap record? The track has changed a lot.

@llandudnoboy "With a 1000+ Hp under your foot any mistake would be serious." Probably would be if it were true.
They didn't.

@Haribo211 Spot on. There's so much wishful thinking in some of these posts you wonder who's actually got a grip on reality and who's got a grip on their dick. I wish you luck Haribo because I've told these idiots the same thing over and over and they don't want to know.
This was Derek Bell, not Richard Lloyd

Guy, I don't know what the driver. But in the end of the vídeo I agree, in very low sound, a man narrated " Derek Bell in Porsche 956 at Le Mans 1983 ". Velol agree about this vídeo: Richard Lloyd, Cannon Porsche 956, Le Mans 1984. But now, I don't know what the driver. Thanks and sorry for my poor english.
