And now we round out the cast and present the last two characters to step up to the tee with Kaz and Cecilia, as well as the two caddies that had yet to make an appearance.

Kaz is a member of the Lu tribe, apparently renowned for their swordsmanship (Clearly it is a useful skill to have if you wish to play PangYa. I can't believe you didn't already know that, come on!) and unfortunately, their susceptibility to Darkness Aura of the Dark Lord...or...something. The whole averted apocalypse scenario that apparently lingers on as a stern reminder of what can happen if you interfere with the natural order and... something... uh... darkness... yeah. Personally, I find the extreme negativity towards "darkness" to be a bit of an unfair bias, just because certain visible practitioners in the course of the history of the world happened to be evil...but that doesn't make the stuff itself inherently bad...but that sort of ideological discourse would ignore the fact that PangYa is a simple little island with its fun-seeking game that just happens to somehow avert disaster, so I'll leave it be and take it at face value for the sake of the sport.

Anyway, apparently it sucks to be of the Lu clan, since they've retreated into seclusion and apparently happen to make the ideal vessels for the potential resurrection of dark forces, which is kinda serious and angsty for such an overall upbeat game, don't you think?

As seen in the intro video, Kaz usually has horns, but they're actually removable headgear...so I don't know what that actually means other than maybe it's a fashion statement, but I wouldn't figure so, because they're supposed to be a relic and indication of the darkness-related susceptibility of the tribe... but I promised not to get all analytical on that, so suffice to say in terms of customization it's an aesthetic option and nothing more. I personally don't much care for them, and I much prefer styling his hair, which disallows the use of most headgear in most characters anyway...that is to say a hairstyle IS a form of headgear.

I'll also point out that I'm not a huge fan of most of Kaz's wardrobe...most of it is randomly full of skin-exposing holes or is full-blown body armor...or involves some other quirk. I actually like this jacket, because unlike most jackets he can wear, they're riddled with all sorts of negative space...and I don't understand at all why that would be, so it doesn't really speak to my sense of style, so I try to find SOMETHING that I think he looks good in.

For some reason, though, I really like his look if he puts on this half-mask...so maybe I don't have any room to talk when it comes to fictional fashion sense...but I like it, and that's what counts, and hopefully you the viewer don't have too much of a problem with it, because there's nothing you can do to change it. That means either good thing or too bad for you, eh?

Now, in definite contrast to all the seriousness that Kaz brings to the table, we have the caddie, I chose to tag along with him, Papel. Papel is...a somehow-animate shopping bag. I'm not sure how he helps in terms of caddying, since he doesn't speak, and just blows along chasing after the player's Phoenix. So what he brings to the game is extreme cuteness that is unrivaled by any caddie in the entire game! ...what? You don't agree? Really? How can you even suggest such a thing?

My opponent is the ever-calculating Cecilia, First Lieutenant of the Navy's impressive battleship Silvia...for whatever any of that is worth. I guess it means that they pay her to be a highly-skilled golf player ...against ...uh ...what does the Navy do in this context again? Apparently her three main directives are to stop pirates, stop resurgence of the Darkness Aura, and to seek out skilled recruits for the Navy. This basically serves as her basis for interaction with Kooh, Kaz, and Max respectively...and really those are basically superficial and unrelated story elements anyway, so she's just the serious and methodical personality on the links. Not that that means much either, but you know what I mean.

Her caddie is the large and soft-spoken TitanBoo...and you had better not make fun of his name, he's such a gentle giant and always has such soothing delivery for his advice to players. Apparently he lives up in the wooded mountainous regions of PangYa where his tribe is renowned for expert club design. Must be kinda warm for him here in the desert. Are you sure we're still on the same general geographic vicinity as the previous match?

Hopefully in future matches, we'll be able to carry on a bit longer so that I can actually use some power shots, because my gauge always fell just short of filling up enough that I could try one out.

  • So...Kaz's reward for winning is that this girl comes over and fondles his back? The music sounds exactly the same as WhiteKhakis's Super Swing Golf 1 videos. Any idea if the courses themselves are the same too?

The official site spells the big guy's name as TitangBoo, so I didn't even realize it was supposed to be "Titan."

(There are only 8 characters and 8 caddies for this game?)

  • I went on for so long about his unfortunate heritage that I forgot to mention how he's an amnesiac haunted (lovingly, of course...clingy, too) by his true love who sacrificed herself so that Kaz wouldn't become the next King of Darkness, apparently something of a hazard of his particular family lineage.

So yeah, while everybody's off playing golf, Kaz is lucky if he doesn't remember all the trauma he suffered...of course the amnesia itself provides him enough angst as is.

  • This game is not really a true sequel, more an expansion of sorts beyond the original. It has the same caddies and characters (voiced now, except for Papel), all the original eleven courses plus three new ones, a map-based tour mode instead of the sequential matches of Pangya Festa, and more character equipment (by how much I'm not sure).

If I had the original, I wouldn't have bought this one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "only"...since eight of each and the customization is quite extensive.

  • Nah, I felt as though it went by pretty fast, that the roster is now complete. I guess the whole deal with the outfits and all that is meant to be a substitute for expanding the character roster further. It's that the character histories are so quirky that it sounds like there'd be a pantheon of PangYa greats to use.

So the current heir to be the King of Darkness now has amnesia, and instead of bringing terror into the word, he's playing golf.

  • The vaguely-established backstory claims that the world was saved from the looming threat only referred to as "Darkness Aura" has been the game of PangYa and its "Mystical Phoenix Ball."

Boost Gates (as seen in the intro video where Hana beats Scout at a driving contest) were apparently developed and placed to help defeat the king...and the Mystical Phoenix Ball was apparently created for fighting the Darkness Aura by Brie and two other witches.

The MMO now has nine characters and ten caddies.
