These guys proved that system specs should never be used as an excuse for lack of talent. They have so much talent and skills to put that talent to fruitition.
If this game was released back in the days of MSX 1, this would certainly be considered the BEST GAME ever for the platform.

It was probably done to save room on the ROM.
This was an entry for the MSXdev '05 contest which had a limited ROM-size as one of the rules.
This way, they'd only have to 'store' the pictures *as is* and then 'inflate' them software-wise to make them somewhat more screen-filling.

Why is the intro rendered in character mode? It looks like something on the 2600.
