I'm just using your own words. You said "cure deafness" & "it's still a disability".
There is nothing to cure & they are not disabled. Maybe if you were part of the Deaf Community you would know that instead of being defensive on the internet.

@CommonStereotype Excuse me? I never once said that deaf people aren't normal. Why don't you take your own advice?
Foot, meet mouth.

I'm sorry but the Deaf are not disabled, sick, or diseased. They are 100% normal & to suggest otherwise only shows your ignorance about Deaf people & Deaf Culture. Either open your mind or stay in the Hearing World & out of Deaf-related matters. ("hearing" signed on the forehead.)

@PancakesoftheLove [...cont] It's also a risky procedure that most commonly does not work even after implantation b/c you have to have some form of residual hearing (yes deaf people can hear certain decibels and pitches). I am not berating you for your comment, I am trying to explain to help you understand that C.I. (Cochlear Implants) is NOT a CURE, whether deafness is considered a disease or whatnot. There is nothing wrong w/ being deaf unless the person finds it so in themselves. [end]

@PancakesoftheLove Deafness is NOT a DISEASE. It's only a disability if the person sees it that way. Deafness is an IDENTITY to most people who have it. And a cochlear implant most certainly is NOT a CURE. It's a procedure where they cut into your brain and add a high power magnet that FORCES your brain to hear ELECTRONICALLY, but only when the other magnet is placed on the outside of the person's head. It's not near hearing the same as hearing naturally. [cont..]

@mumup92 You're right that my choice of word is poor, but I have no other real way to word it. I mean, it's still a disability no matter how you slice it. Denying that won't get you anywhere.
How lucky we are to live in this world at such a time that things like this are being made possible. To cure deafness... even as early as fifty years ago, we'd be called madmen if we were to suggest such a thing.
