Najib Bahri is from Tunisia. He has studied numerous world rhythms & worked with numerous international musicians from Middle-eastern, Persian, Afghani, Latin, American & N. African styles. He wants to share with you the persian drum (toumbek/tonbak).

Pls note: He is describing how to translate Middle-Eastern/North African rhythms (dom-es-tek) onto the Toumbak. For you to criticise that he is not playing classical Persian. You are right. He is not playing classical Persian. He has learned this rhythm/song after years of playing with Persian & Iraqi musicians. He just wants to share with you his prized instrument & his appreciation of Persian music. This drum is a real 1 piece instrument- not 2 piece; and is the correct size. It's a really beautiful instrument.

People, the world is getting smaller. We have loosen up, learn from one another, and appreciate other's art & culture. Pretty soon someone can play Persian/Middle-Eastern rhythms on the conga drums.

  • how can you make the video and spell tombek wrong on the title

  • So you think I should spell it as "tombek?"

OK! for future video reviewers & if you are Persian, what is the correct way of spelilng this? Don't forget we try spell things out phonetically. Is it "e" or "a?"

  • Even though Najib spells it "T-O-M-B-E-K" in the vid. We were corrected by Persians that it's spelled with an "A" which is why I reveised it in the title. You are not being a smart ass, you just visited the vid AFTER I had edited the title. I don't have time to explain everything re:the editing & I don't have time to re-record this vid clip, so just go with the flow on this. Thanks!

  • PS I'm not Arabic at all. I'm THAI, married to the Tunisian.

The world is getting smaller :)

  • What's with some Iranians playing JUST the Tonbak? Let's see them play Persian rhythm on darbouka, tambourine, or cahoun. Yalla! Post some Iranians playing other non-Persian instruments PLEASE!!!

I allow discussion, BUT I'm really tired of receiving outright HATRED from some Iranians. 1 guy called us "f**k'in Arabs" - totally uncalled for. Najib is not saying that he's an expert in Iranian rhythms. He's just loves this drum!! Not too many non-Iranians own a tonbak. Man, take a chill pill!

  • To those who are criticising him: I agree that neither his explanation nor his demonstration is standardized and classic, but the bottom line in music is to have fun with it and he definitely has it.

  • Hi there! Thanks for the message. Yes! The bottom line is that we are learning from one another & making music together is better than arguing about little things. It just irritates me that people will say "go look for something else that you are good in".

  • Why are so many people responding here so ready to tear down others and accuse them of ignorance? These are very bad manners. I am African-Am. and live in the US so I know about BAD MANNERS. Let's respect the beauty that comes these cultures---Moroccan, Iranian, Tunisian, African, ----and leave out the judging and tearing down. It doesn't make you bigger or better or smarter to do that. However smart you might be, after the teardown you are shown as spiritually ignorant!
