Most cell phone contracts keep you with a carrier for at least a year. And if you leave early? You lose $200, maybe more. But money reporter Stacy Johnson has the story of a service that will promises to let you get in or out of a contract without the hefty fees.

  • @mommygene666 i know your comment was posted 8 months ago, but the reason there are contracts is so they recover the rip off cell phone prices. The cancellation fee is the difference. Ex. Phone is 450$. 2 year contract, get phone at 150$, cancellation fee is 350$. Its not the carriers, becuase i remember when Verizon introduced the iphone, they went into 5B in debt to have to wait to get their money back off contracts. Its the cell phone manufactures. Cell phone plans are a different story.

  • What Ashley should do is research something before making a two year agreement with a phone company. Ask a friend, read a review or watch a video review, or go on one of the many websites that show phone coverage in your area. Phone company's also have coverage locators on their websites that map out your exact area. Maybe Ashley should take some responsibility for HER mistake.

  • @Matto2t Or you can simply do what I do and just buy the phone you want , then you get to skip the whole contract thing all together. Good example , I wanted nextel for the rugged phones. The phone I wanted ( Motorola Tough Guy ) was $122.00 with a 2 year contract , and $457.00 to buy straight out. Found the exact same phone listed on E Bay , brand new with a buy it now price of $200.00 . so for $78.00 more I got the phone brand new and never signed a contract , and to this day I never will.

  • I have never been able to grasp the whole concept of cell phone contracts in the first place. With land line phones, you don't have to go through that whole contract crap. So, why should one have to go through that whole contract crap with cell phones? Why should cell phones be different? I think that whole contract concept is very very Jewish! Wern't they told six million times already that their crap won't be put up with any longer?

  • What Ashley should consider is getting a TracFone. With TracFone, she will always have service no matter where she's at. The story in this case is another reason why I would not want a contract. If I were to have a contract with my phone, I would probably end up having the same issue like Ashley had: lousy cell phone service. Who needs contracts anyway????
