Before her wedding, Shadya learns her husband does not want her to continue karate.

Shadya Zoabi is the 2003 Shotokan Karate Champion and an Israeli-Arab. The film depicts the conflict between independence/self-determination, and tradition/cultural bonds.

Got to see the entire film about a week ago

Very moving account of a strong, successful, independent woman who ultimately submits to the culture around her. Very saddening. At times she didn't seem very endearing to herself, but she still didn't deserve to wind up how she did..

Even her father, who seemed to back her 100%, appears to practically throw her under the bus after her last tournament bout. And that last image of her.. You could just tell that she had been broken inside..

i assure if she was a palistinian she would not speak hebrew with her family especially not on my wedding day since the israelis are killing her people. i for sure would not speak it and i would only learn to speak it if it gets the israelis off my land and out of my country.

I just read that Shadya started her training for the next championships and her trainer said that she is is better than before. Looks like that at the end her husband couldn't lock her up forever!

@dearborn05 usually arabs celebrate twice, the first celebration is a small wedding and the bride can wear any color, and the second is the biggest celebration and the bride wears white :)
