What is unschooling?

It was so great to see a person of Afrikan descent on video speaking about unschooling. I'm now inspired to post videos of our unschooling journey here and on my blog. Thanks!

I'm an unschooling mom and have been living this lifestyle for 14 years with my kids, but for 30 years for myself. It takes a lot of faith for parents to accept this lifestyle because we have been very well-schooled by the government to believe that only public schools can teach. Rot! I have two unschool graduates who are making their way in the world and they are awesome people! I have seen the results and they are worth the risk. I am glad that you took the time to make this video.

I've noticed in a lot of posts that unschooled children seemed to be interested or "ready", when they see other children doing the same things or experience frustration as cues to learn something. I am not too comfortable with that. It reminds me of when I lagged about the first half of semester and had to crunch near the end while my friends were able to relax. I am just not understand it personally. In the end, they have to learn anyhow.

@crystalpaw But being aware of the environment and being thoughtful doesn't get you into medical school, or law school, or even college! If you're going to spend your whole day blowing bubbles and watching movies, good luck at passing the ACT/SAT's....

I love and appreciate this definition and explanation!

I am a Christian unschooling mom (11 years). I have thought about the whole death, illness and all. Of course those are very real possibilities as I will in fact someday, die.
But, as already stated. The assumption is that an unschooled child is not on the same level as their peers. This is not the case with my children at all. They are beyond they're "grade level". If I died while they were school age and someone would need to come after me to teach them, they'd simply evaluate them.

Great video, it is wonderful to hear from a non-unschooler. Especially when they do understand how unschooling works.

Thanks for posting this video! I am an unschool mom myself of and 11yo boy, and I appreciate your kind regards! Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your comments. I am especially encouraged when I hear about other children that have learned to read (albeit later) or do something else that traditional schooling deems as important in such a short period of time. It gives me hope!
I try not to worry about dying and leaving my kids behind. That's too negative! I say make some preparations, but live life and have fun. Everything we do or that is done to us is for a reason and remember... no one gets out of this life alive!

Thank you for your thoughts on this. Was good to hear. I am a former high-school teacher who knew I would homeschool for certain, but eventually embraced unschooling. I agree with you about it taking confidence, and I am grateful my life fell into place the way it did so that I would have what's needed to allow my kids to experience this natural way of learning and living...
I am not an unschooler either, but unschooling does have a great deal of value... judge not, lest you be judged!
