December 17, 2011--J pod of the SRKW population travelled the inland waters of Puget Sound, Washington USA. From a distance, on the shore of Edmonds, we observed the pod traveling northbound, first spread out in a wide range across the sound. Quite suddenly the lead group of 6-7 orca turned south, sprinted back to the now grouped pod. They proceeded to travel slowly northward in a very tight cluster (at one point circling the research boat) . Unbeknownst to us at the time of filming, a baby orca had been born to J16 sometime that day, perhaps moments before the call for all orca to meet up. Welcome baby J48, here is a spliced together movie of her/his first hours!
