Http://DaveCapuzelo.com Heres the famous drum lick from "Chuck E's in Love". I know this lick never dies, so I wanted to post it for all who may not know how to play it.

Its linear in fashion, and the sticking is FLLRRLLF RLLRRLLF, with the right hand coming over to the snare for 2 & 4. These notes are played as 32nd notes, against a moderately slow beat.

As usual, my video camera is lousy and wont pick up any subtle playing, but in reality the lick is played with softer grace notes than Im playing here, and a little bit slower.

I start the video off playing it REAL slow, so you can hopefully grasp how the sticking falls, then I bring it up to a workable speed.

Enjoy!

  • I've heard Gadd use this in solo's ..he's one of the few technical drummers that make it look and feel so effortless!

  • @htool11462 Thats the thing about him. I can play this lick, so can you, so can pretty much anyone with a little bit of practice, but NOT with Steve's feel on the set. Thats nearly impossible to duplicate and its what made him one of the most in demand drummers of the past 40 years...

  • That snare drum sounds killing man!

  • @ParallaxDrums Thanks! Its a Brady snare drum, Jarrah ply 5 1/2 x 14.

  • Is that a Gretsch kit?

  • @Abazaba66 Yes, its a Catalina Birch from about 2004. I had it till 2008. Now I play Gretsch New Classics and Brady drums.

  • @Weallfart Actually, I just watched 2 of your videos, and you honestly sound good. Your "problem" is a great one to have; you're slightly struggling with things that are still a bit out of your range, but thats good because it keeps you learning and wanting more, right? By the time you can do the things that you've struggled with, you have a new set of goals, so, again, it forces you to keep getting better. Too many people stagnate and never get better...youre in an enviable position!

  • @Dcdrmwthme true true. One thing I do to make it a little more tasty is keep all of those left hand hits at low impact or ghost noting them. Yours sound really good though!

  • Hey thanks for slowing that down for all of us to learn!

  • @Dcdrmwthme Sounds like you gave him a turd and tried to drown it in cake icing.

  • youre ghosts are to powerfull,... but nice work ;O)

  • Dude, that's pretty kewl. Now that I think of it, I've heard some of the drummers I jam with do the same thing. And I love it.
