  • Great tutorial but how do you make sure the floor plan is to scale?

  • @PowderpuffPuncher First set the units setup (preferences) to something like metres. I've made a vid on units if you do a quick search of my channel. Make sure the plane had right size\aspect ratio based on the image dimensions and that is most of the way along.

  • I don't know if I'm just being dumb on this, but my image does not show up when I click on show shaded material in viewport. I am using a bmp image file. Is there something I need to do with that file in order to have the floor plan image show up in the viewport?

  • @leishepherd Does it stay grey? Check the plane is facing the right way, you could also try converting the image to a different format although this shouldn't make any difference

Also, check to make sure you trying to display the material that is being used. When you apply it to the object the material should show triangles in the corner of the material sphere (white if you have the object selected)

Let me know if these suggestions make any difference

  • @MarcusDesigns The plane does not stay grey. It turns white when I apply the material, but the lines of the floor plan do not show.

I checked the display and the material shows white triangles in the corners around the sphere. I also tried using a .gif, .png, .jpeg, and .bmp, and they all do the same thing.

Could it be something to do with my original file? Or am I missing something else somewhere? Thank you for replying so quickly. I'm using 3Ds Max 2012 if that makes a huge difference.

  • @leishepherd Just to check, have you rotated the plane to make sure the image isn't on the other side. Not sure why it isn't working and the version of Max shouldn't make any difference for this.

You could also try some other images on different primitives to see if they work as a starting point but this is a bit of a mystery to me. I am assuming that you haven't made any changes to the configuration settings otherwise it would be difficult to find the error.

  • Very helpful, thank you for the video tutorial:)

  • @leishepherd I found out that it matters which material editor you use. Make sure you are using the same one as he is in the video and not the new one.

  • @HELLF0X14 To start, you should look at the basic videos provided by Autodesk and accessible when you first start the software. Also, there are online tutorials that are well-produced, also by Autodesk that would be a good part of learning.

If you like learning through videos, I have a playlist that is having more videos for 2012 put up as regularly as possible, and there are many other examples of teaching the software on YouTube etc.

  • @meshlife88 It would be easier using Illustrator, but I try not to use additional software in the vids as some may not have these available. As you suggest, Illustrator is ideal for making the paths and I would recommend anyone to give it a try. You just need to make sure that all of the paths are connected correctly otherwise there will be extrusion errors. Thanks for the added information for others to follow.

    Regards

    Marcus
