We need is a larger movement toward self education. I don't necessarily mean teaching yourself, but merely become better educated through our own initiative rather than through schools and government. This has become even more possible since the widespread use of the internet, and sites such as Khan Academy being founded. When you go to college, your paying for an education and a degree. But since you can get an education that could be better for the cost of wifi, you are just getting a degree.

The best way to fix a lousy education system and help get more kids educated is to cut funding for education and stop helping the kids that need money for higher education. I may be wrong here, but I just don't think that is going to work.

Yeah, my GPA is like 2.5, but I agree with you. I learned much more from reading philosophy and the humanities than I am in college. I'm a Political Science major, and I get B's and A's in those classes, but the other classes are so dumbed down it's hard to maintain interest. Still, we may be the exception, but not the rule since most people don't appreciate non-fictitious literature.

You don't need college to be educated, my friend. I read one book at my public library and learned more about American history than I did in high school. I was an A+ student, too.

Yeh I'm pretty glad to be an AUSSIE right know. Quick question what is an average engineering degree cost to a relatively normal college. Not MIT or anything like that??

Skip college! Become an autodidact and attend webinars every week, read (books, scholarly articles, and newspaper articles), watch educational videos (RSA Animate, Khan Academy, Lynda), take online courses (Coursera and Poynter) and create a portfolio. Then, gain some practical knowledge, and learn how to network. You will save: time, money, and energy.

Since 1980, college tuition has increased by 600% because the government got involved with the student loan business. The government subsidized loans and caused the rate to skyrocket. If I worked for the government, then I would refuse to give funding to colleges and universities until they lowered tuition. After the tuition issue is fixed, then I would work on the quality of "education".

Just to let everyone know, almost all community colleges and most universities offer financial aids and there are several type of grants deserving students can apply to. By the way Lisa, you look good :-)

I think college should be free. I would bet that if it was the economy would be boosted and the crime rate would go down
