All I can say is wow! I heard my oldie, Wild Horses, on the radio and picked up a CD which I thought was his golden oldies from the 80's, and it was "The Best of and Beyond," all remakes of his oldies. I have never been a fan of remakes....and it takes me A LONG time to like an album, usually after it's run its course...well...all I can say is I am pleasantly surprised...his sound is grown-up: sophisticated, tight, smooth, sensitive...WOW! A fan for life, now!
Anyone who’s followed Vanelli for as long as I have will note this as another example of his usual brilliance. Though many will not be able to get past his 70s and 80s roots, those of us who are rabid fans see far beyond the Elvis or Tom Jones-like bravado, curious hair, and to some oddly, gender ambiguity. Why? Quite simply because his work delves directly into human pathos fearlessly with enormous sensitivity, technique, always searching creativity, subtlety, and yes - genius.
Here he once again encapsulates his ongoing life journey: his break with the forces of the marketplace long ago led by a “star” into the wilderness path of any real artist. There are resonances here with many of his other works while also inventing, as he always does, something entirely new and intoxicating. Listen closely to the nuanced colors synthesizing different musical styles that underlay his deceptively simple lyrics. It’s not just tasteful. Meaning is imbued in every beautiful frame.
It’s closer to art song than pop song really, though who would believe it? His “code” (both personal and professional) is revealed as to what is most important: faith, family, artistic independence, and community. Certainly don’t want to spill the beans to others who may merely like it as a pop tune, but true fans know better. He is after far bigger game and we love and respect him for it. We get it Gino and cry out from the wilderness for more.
