*Pella, Iowa*
For over 60 years, Pella has celebrated a Tulip Festival dedicated to the memory of its founders. Seven-hundred Hollanders, under the leadership of Hendrick Pieter Scholte, established the city and named it Pella, city of refuge. In search of a new home and religious freedom, they immigrated to America, arriving in Pella in August 1847. Determination, hard work, and a devout reverence for God made Pella a haven still enjoyed by its residents today. Tulip Time commemorates the sacrifices of the founding fathers. Its like a quick, fun trip to Holland!
*Amana Colonies*
The history of the community goes back more than 250 years. Their first village was called Amana, a biblical name meaning remain faithful. At first the members lived a simple communal life. Five more villages were built and the village of Homestead was purchased outright because of its railroad terminal. Farming was, and still is, the mainstay of the group.
