The Cartesian coordinate system is defined by a point and a set of mutually orthogonal axes. In the case of a 3D system the axes are three. A point P(x,y,z) in a 3D space has unique Cartesian coordinates independent on where the coordinate system is placed and how it is oriented.
This animation shows a point hovering in a 3D space "equipped" with a Cartesian coordinate system.
