Because elsewhere but North America, the UK, and Europe, people can commit to saying they paid $50,000 for a Toyota, whereas Lexus plays that role.

Really? Lately I've been hearing Toyota quality isn't what it's cracked up to be. In fact, the '07 Camry V6 was rated poorly for reliability. Besides, I had a Toyota. My Dad had a Toyota. They had some of the cheapest quality interiors around. Mine didn't hold up well at all and had major problems by 140k. The guy I just sold my Volvo to said he looked at used Toyotas and Hondas too, but they seemed so cheap. I feel bad for people that pay thousands more for these cars. Not worth it.

Yeah, but a badge-engineered Lexus is actually built to the standard of a proper luxury car (and is reliable as well, because it's a Toyota) unlike some other overpriced badge-engineered models. Jaguar X-Type, anyone?

yeah badges do over throw ideas for car shopping. Then again, that is because we associate badges with things like quality, performance, and in Mercs, and the mighty Rolls Royce safety. So badges do make sense because of what they represent, the problem is now adays people only look at the badges and forget what backs that badge up, just like how gold is suppose to back up money.

Yea, I sold VW for a while and here in the US the mindset is VW are cheap econo cars. And while that is true, there are some really nice VWs but they cost in the realm of the BMWs and Mercs, and as a result they don't sell cause people care more about badges than the actual car. Toyotas in Japan are really nice cars and people fork out lots of money for them, so it makes perfect sense.

There is some truth in that. Remember though a Lexus or an Infiniti is like buying one of those Japo cars but improved in a lot of ways. The Camery is nice but the Lex Es has some stuff you can't get in the Camry. I have an Infiniti I-Series which is very similar to a Nissan Ceferio. However, the Ceferio had a lot of bugs so the Infiniti is not only nicer looking and has better handling but it also has improved reliability.
