Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today (19 November) that the current global recession is hitting every society, threatening achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and undermining security, with an additional one hundred million people that could fall into poverty by the end of this year.
Speaking at the 2009 Parliamentary Hearing on The way forward - Building political support and implementing effective responses to the global economic crisis, Ban put emphasis on providing assistance to the worlds most vulnerable people.
Days away from the Copenhagen Climate Conference, the Secretary-General highlighted the role of investing in green sectors as a way to improve the chances for recovery and sustainable growth while preserving the environment.
He also pointed out the importance of food security, trade, and generating job opportunities as part of a coordinated effort to respond to the global economic crisis.
Lastly, the Secretary-General spoke of the need to reform the Bretton Woods Institutions, saying that inclusive growth requires inclusive institutions and that global frameworks and bodies must be made more accountable, more representative and more effective in order to move from recession to recovery to renewal.
The 2009 Parliamentary Hearing was jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Office of the President of the General Assembly.
