This is my custom made Doepfer modular system. I choosed the modules very carefully. I started from Doepfers "basic configuration" and expanded this configuration to my needs. For real flexibility I needed at least 3 oscillators, 3 ADSR, filter bank, 3 filters, and so on. My system contents the following:

3x A-110 VCO
1x A-114 DUAL RING MODULATOR
1x A-115 AUDIO DIVIDER
1x A-138b MIXER LOGARITHM.
1x A-120 LOWPASS FILTER 24 dB
1x A-105 LOWPASS FILTER 24 dB SSM
1x A-106-6 XP MULTIMODE FILTER
1x A-181 MULTIPLES 2
1x A-176 CONTROL VOLTAGE SOURCE
1x A-125 VOLTAGE CONTROLLED PHASER
1x A-119 EXTERNAL INPUT / ENV FOLLOWER
1x A-131 VCA LOGARITHM.
1x A-132-3 DUAL LIN/EXP VCA
1x A-118 NOISE / RANDOM
1x A-148 DUAL S&H
1x A-143-3 QUAD LFO
1x A-175 DUAL VOLTAGE INVERTER
1x A-165 DUAL TRIGGER MODIFIER
2x A-180 MULTIPLES
1x A-128 FIXED FILTER BANK
3x A-140 ADSR
1x A-170 DUAL SLEW LIMITER
1x A138a MIXER LINEAR
1x A-160 CLOCK DIVIDER
1x A-161 CLOCK SEQUENCER
1x A-185-2 PRECISION ADDER
1x A-190-1 MIDI / SYNC INTERFACE

With this configuration, you can make almost everything what a classic analog modular synth can do.

For my modular I built myself a cabinet of massive beechwood. It was a lot of work, but it looks great, worthy and timeless now.

In this video I wanted to show the basic sound of the system - you can hear how good the oscillators, filters, envelopes actually sound.

I played the A-100 via MIDI from the Korg MicroX keyboard, I also used his arpeggiator. Sometimes I used reverb from the Lexicon MPX-500 and delay from Roland DEP-5.

  • i was planning on building a doepfer system myself in the future with 3 VCO's. my question: I want to use a midi keyboard to trigger the VCO's. How do I get the VCO's triggerd with the Midimodule? do i connect the cv output to the VCO ? or do I need a signal multiplier that routes the cv output to each VCO or is it linked internally so i don't have to use any cabel to trigger the VCO's? Thanks in advance if you answer :)

  • Can you use any midi keyboard on a doepfer?

  • @504ecj if you have a midi-to-cv module in your system, of course

  • What's your opinion on the A-110's ? Do they track well when you do long octave jumps ?

  • @Dovinia they track very well! Every module is checked by Doepfer before leaving the factory.

  • finally some good reference demo. Doepfer modular is one of the biggest victim of crappy youtube demos. i almost believed it sucks.

  • tolles video, eines der wenigen leicht verdaulichen modulardemos im netz.

  • Wow...that sounds incredble!!

  • Beat it's heavy ;)

  • I hear some Depeche Mode synth quality in this unit ;)

  • You can't beat analog, that's for sure, I was privileged to make a PAIA Fatman synth years ago with the kit they send you and a weeks adventure into putting it together with iron and mind. ;) Had midi control too, it was great.. Sadly my adventure ended because it kept falling off my desk.. Front heavy and didn't come with a cab.
