Released in 2008 on Modular Records.

Cut Copy is an indie rock / electronic trio from Melbourne, Australia. They were originally a solo project that started in 2001. This their 2nd album.

Best album of 2008 ? That's what some people say.

In Ghost Colours is a pretty good album. It has fair sized handful of really good, club friendly tracks on it. Lots of synth, thumping' beats, snaky bass lines, infectious grooves. All the songs on here have really good production and sound very slick. There is a prevalent "new wave" sound throughout most of this album, in a good way. The more dance orientated tracks on here are catchy and highly enjoyable.

However, the album does have some more indie rock orientated songs as well. While not being bad, they are far from being anywhere near "the best of 2008" material, in my opinion. To me, songs like "Unforgettable Season" and "So Haunted" seem to be just some so-so filler and are forgettable. But even in these instances, the songs still maintain the shimmering production values as the rest of the album.

Far from a bad album, it's actually really good for as far as this radio friendly, polished indie dance stuff goes. Songs are lush and layered. Lots of catchy songs. Very colourful and vivid. Songs blend well together throughout the album. For sure a Top 10 of 2008, but not the very top.

3.8/5

  • I listen to Cut Copy for about ten minutes, love it, and then I hate them. I don't know why...

  • You don't have to explain yourself to me. I understand.

  • I really do enjoy this album from time to time. I get great pleasure out of it, but I can never get myself to listen to it more than once in a row.

  • If I didn't have to DJ, I'd probably wouldn't even own it.

  • I want you to know i'm not ignoring your videos, but for some reason youtube doesn't want me to see them.

  • Unforgivable !!

  • Cut Copy are brilliant.

Just thought I'd let you know it's Lights and Music, not Lights and Magic. :p

  • I was totally washing dishes when I noticed that halfway through your review....I was dancing.

  • i haven't actually listened to this vinyl as much as i thought. kinda a shame. i thought i'd play it more then i actually did.

  • Gotta say, that is a pretty epic album!

  • Sexy saxophone interludes FTW. Pretty good for upbeat insubstantial pop stuff, I enjoy it at least. I agree that the dance element is the best part of this album.

  • I have played them when i DJ also...

  • sounds like the kind of music they play in those hipster coffee shops! Nice review.

  • st00pid g00d. def agree with you. i'm totally into some of the songs, but the others... are kinda lack-luster.
