Heaney is just brilliant. For an incredibly personal poem his emotional detachment creates an uneasy atmosphere as he struggles with conflicting emotions. Heaney contrasts the laughing baby to symbolize that life continues but also to emphasize the sadness that the other characters are feeling. Heaney also encompasses the theme of time in his poetry, in this poem it is used to emphasize the brevity of his brothers life. Heaney ends the poem with a single devastating final line. Just Brilliant

perhaps an irish accent would be more appropriate. many irish poems were written about british brutality. we dont need brits to narrate our poetry.
