There are many different kinds of greatness in writing. The 70's were a peculiar time and no one has painted the pulse of that culture like Maupin does. As we lose freedom and dignity by the hour there will be a time when we will turn around and look back to see the masterpiece that Tales of the CIty is. Sofistication means the peaceful and productive coexistence of more than one point of view or order.

He called him a great story teller. If you read (and enjoy) all of the Tales of the City books plus the more recent Michael Tolliver lives book, "great story teller" isn't an undeserved comment.

He's a very entertaining writer who deserves his popularity, but I wouldn't call him "great."
