  • Sad...rest in peace, Winning Colors. What a big, tough girl she was.

  • Any video on General Assembly? She really did show up the boys didn't she...

  • Hi. I've been on the lookout for General Assembly footage, believe you me.

I especially want to see the '79 Travers where he sets the stakes and track record of 2:00 flat that still stands at Saratoga.

Yep, Winning Colors was a big, strong girl that just loved to romp on the lead. She did well to hold them off.

    Take care.

  • I hate to correct Dave Johnson, but Gary Steven didn't "send Winning Colors to the front". She hated it when other horses were in front of her. Take a look at my post of the Santa Anita Oaks and see how she reacted when Goodbye Halo put a head in front near the 3/8 pole.

  • Lol, Winning Colors was quite the fiesty girl. I loved how she just had to be in front, lots of fun to watch. Thanks for stopping by. Take care.

  • Thanks so much for this, just one example of Winning Colors using her brilliant speed to her advantage. Technically she was gray, not roan (sorry, I train racehorses so I felt compelled to correct the announcer). Nonetheless a fabulous Kentucky Derby!

cf1970, keep the great memories coming!!!!

  • Glad you enjoyed it. You have a wonderful job in training horses. It must be very rewarding work. I'll do my best to keep the videos coming, I appreciate the comments. Take care.

  • Thanx for the memories of this race.Winning colors was one of the first horses that caught my attention and started my interest in horse racing.still a fond memory along with Sillytwopockets and Zagava at Canterbury Downs in Minnesota in 1988

  • I love the announcers call.

R.I.P Winning Colors. You were a magnificent filly.

  • The first Derby I ever attended. I had Winning Colors to win. You never forget your first.

  • I think that this fillies best race was the Santa Anita derby. She was at her peak in that race. The time was fantastic and it was the most impressive race i have ever seen a filly run. She still ran dynamite in the derby though. I just wish she saved some of her peak for the triple crown races. Great video, thanks a lot. :)

  • one of the greatest moments ever! what a win! and 6 minths later her epic battle with personal ensign in a race for the ages!

  • She was a great filly. Look who she beat. Risen Star, Forty Niner (1 of the scrappiest horses I have seen), Private Terms, Seeking the Gold (who never raced as a 2YO, Proper Reality. All champions in there own right.49er and STG carried on their rivalry when RS never raced again after the Belmont. Saw them live in the Haskell at Monmouth Park. Great race as usual and another great 3YO crop.

  • She was AWESOME!!!!!

  • She's a CHARACTER! She doesn't want to let anyone get past her!!!

I think running her in the 3 triple crown races took something out of her. They should have only picked 1 or 2. She had worse and worse races after this!

Still I think her fans would have complained loudly if they kept her out of the Preakness...

  • There's a pensive, or maybe somewhat confounded?.. quality to Johnson's call of the opening first quarter, which turns out to be perfectly put; his timber resonates with each fraction, and so much information all the way around!.. I contend it's maybe the greatest race call ever.. oh, and what she did here?.. and the Santa Anita Derby 2 weeks earlier? (watch that!).. she's one of the greats (an understatement I know).. and Lukas and Gary Stevens too.. etc.. Great moment in history..

  • I was 8 yrs old in 1988 and I told my dad "Winning Colors is going to win" he asked why, I said "with a name like that, how can you lose?" Beautiful video, horse and race. Very cool!!
