Leptin (Greek leptos meaning thin) is a 16 kDa protein hormone that plays a key role in regulating energy intake and energy expenditure, including appetite and metabolism. It is one of the most important adipose derived hormones. The Ob(Lep) gene (Ob for obese, Lep for leptin) is located on chromosome 7 in humans. This animation tells how leptin rewires neurons that controls our hunger staiety feelings. The lecture is given by Jeffrey M. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D of HHMI.

from what i have heard: this does not work in humans, because humans are not lacking leptin. these "ob mice" are modified to lack leptin. obese humans are insensitive to leptin not lacking. adding leptin would most likely worsen the insensitivity, long term. much like with insulin: injecting insulin is the least ideal treatment for the insensitive. (dont confuse with type 1 diabetics who lack insulin).
