When the woofer 'growls' like that, that's the sound of distorted bass, and that's the indication that the woofer is outside of its linear excursion range and into the nonlinear range, which is usually due to mechanical self-limiting. That driver can sound very good with a proper contouring filter; do a google search for Taterworks Whetstones.
