Bobby Younkin
Learjet 23 Aerobatics
2002 AirPower Over Hampton Roads
Langley AFB, Virginia
Saturday June 22, 2002
IN THIS VIDEO, watch as Bobby Younkin flies this Learjet 23 through an aerobatic performance over Langley AFB. Younkin was famous for his aerobatic performances in Samson, a Beech 18, a Decathlon, and this Learjet. Sadly, he lost his life, along with fellow pilot Jimmy Franklin, on July 10, 2005 in Moose Jaw, SK flying the Masters of Disaster routine with Jim LeRoy and Kent Shockley.
If you are interested in purchasing DVDs of specific aircraft or of airshows, interested in everything related to airshows (where the jet teams will be, all airshow performers, airshow reports from airshows I have attended, previews of airshows I will be attending, etc.), and/or everything related to aviation - including spotting guides to my favorite airports and military bases and aircraft factfiles, please check out Steve's Airshow World at www.stevesairshow.com .
Did this plane have the standard CJ 610 engines??

The lear jet is located at the Arkansas Air Museum. Matt crashed in his grandfather Jim Younkin's Mullicoupe. Bobby bought the Decathlon in 2004 with the intention of teaching both Matt and his sister Amanda aerobatics. After his untimely death in July of 2005, Matt took the Decathlon out and taught himself aerobatics in it.

I watched this great man perform a spectacular aerobatic routine in this same jet at the Indianapolis Airshow. I met him after the show at a meet and greet at his airplane. Very friendly and willing to answer all questions. Jimmy Franklin also flew his
Rolls Royce jet powered Waco biplane. He could take that biplane straight up for 2500 feet. Awesome. My lasting impression of Bobby Younkin was that this man knew he was alive. Two incredible aviators. Rest in peace gentlemen.

Untrue. In a December 14, 2006 with AVweb's Russ Niles, Bill Lear Jr. said that bit of information is "as far away from the truth as one can get." The Lear 23 was a "clean sheet" airplane. They only used the Swiss facility for some wind tunnel testing and the also used the multi-spar wing construction method used in the Swiss plane. The wing design (as well as the rest of the plane) was entirely new design.
