He learned from Mississippi Fred McDowell, who was also not big on chord changes. None of the north Mississippi hill country players are, really.

He reminds me of Fred McDowell in that rhythm of his, got a feeling he listened to Fred when younger or maybe from other locals influenced by McDowell's train rhythm. R.L. certainly has that certain x factor.
