Atheism has influenced people to repress, demote, fire, torture and kill people that disagree with it. This trait is not unique to atheism. Many philosophies and establishments have done this when they had power. Some Christians have done it too, but quite a few Christian leaders and/or nations including America, explicitly outlawed discrimination based on whether people agreed with the Christian worldview or not. VERY rare to see in history. IN EVERY country that has been officially atheist, freedom of thought was only a dream. Atheism in power has been the greatest enemy of free thought in history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjFVUYmwZTo

@nemirn theycommitte their atrocities, without a GOD or higher authority to stop or limit them, absolutely. they saw themselves as God unto themselves, which was a foundation for the acts they committed. by their own words,
no God made sin, evil, whatever they chose, possible and, good to them, since they were just "animals" and under no ones thumb so to speak. if you dont know this, its easily discovered with a minor amount of research.its there

@Gnomefro you have a very bizarre, and inaccurate view of reality. the majority of humans, in all governments, believe in that"claim" that religion is NOT nonsense. get your facts straight. your statement is purely false, all atheistic governments crush freedom. not even debatable. OTHERS can as well, but, atheistic governments are built FOR that purpose.

@nemirn You just proved yourself wrong. Marx saw atheism as part of the path to the goal of communism, according to you, pfft. Where's your logic?

No, atheism has never caused any of these things. How could it possibly? This guy is so quick to attack atheism but you notice none of these haters can give any example from history of these claims they make.

Now pause for a moment and consider this statement carefully. If Karl Marx, the intellectual founder of Marxism and communism, repudiated atheism as meaningless and no longer needed, how then could atheism be considered the cause of the atrocities committed under communism?

To Karl Marx, atheism was just a stage on the path to communism, and it was ultimately "unreal" and "no longer needed" by socialism and communism. This is what Karl Marx himself said about atheism: Atheism as a denial of this unreality; has no longer any meaning, for atheism is a denial of God and tries to assert through this negation the existence of man; but socialism as such no longer needs this mediation.

Atheism embodies no particular ideology, world view or dogma and cannot be justified as any significant factor in the atrocities of these people. (If anything, the lack of belief in a supernatural overlord leaves one to respect the importance of all of mankind peacefully coexisting, because unlike in religious doctrine, the penalties one may face for immoral acts are often levied in the material world, during the life of the perpetrator.)

@SelfPromoting
That's not what I mean.
The vast majority of atheists reject theistic and supernatural claims based on skeptical inquiry.
Mao, Stalin, and Pol Pot committed their atrocities under the name of their own totalitarian dogmatism. These leaders replaced conventional religion with their own quasi-religious ideologies.

@Gnomefro If freedom of thought cannot be taken away, then why are you so concerned with what is taught in the school systems? Let the religious right have their way and allow them to burn atheism, secularism, etc. and teach Bible-based Christianity since thought cannot be taken away.
And that is so absurdly laughable. The USA had freedom of religion, yet the founding fathers did not think religion was unsupported nonsense. Hardly. What historical/sociological data are you studying?
