Coldplay's Chris Martin has scuffled with a photographer while attempting to make a low-profile exit from a New York hospital with wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

The musician became incensed after the provocative paparazzo said "congratulations Chris", referencing rumours that preganancy was the reason behind Paltrow's hospital visit.

"Get the f*** out of here, man — have some respect," Martin said as he pummelled the photographer to the ground and seized the camera.

Martin then attempted to get into a car with the camera, but the photographer pulled him back and the pair began scuffling .

"You give it back to him or this door's getting broken," the man videoing the incident can be heard saying.

Martin, who frequently wears a hooded jacket to disguise his face, has been in several altercations with paparazzi.

In 2003 he was charged with smashing the windscreen and letting down the tyres of a photographer's car in Australia.

Snapper Jon Lister was taking photos of Martin surfing at Byron Bay.

He also faced charges following a scuffle with a photographer outside a London restaurant in 2004 when Gwyneth was pregnant with daughter Apple.

Rumours that Paltrow could be pregnant again began circulating after she was seen "slumped over in a wheelchair" at Mount Sinai hospital earlier this week.

A source told the New York Daily News they spotted the couple heading into the hospital's maternity ward, the Klingenstein Pavilion.

"They looked very serious," the witness said. "She looked upset. They went right past everyone and into the elevator. It seemed like they were expected."

But other reports said Paltrow was admitted to hospital after she starved herself.

A package was delivered to her in hospital from Organic Avenue in New York, which conducts a five-day fast.

The spokesperson for the company said the fast allowed for some food.

"She's eating salads, there [are] juices. There's actually quite a bit of food there, it's just all raw and organic," the spokesperson said.

Paltrow, 35, has reportedly returned home.

"Gwyneth is fine and at home — we are not commenting further," her publicist Stephen Huvane told OK Magazine.
