Australia voted against the referendum to become a rebublic because the republic model the government proposed was wrong and had holes in it that could have created a dictatorship. And the US troops are stationed so that they can observe China.

the thing was that the aussie desert is dead and so why not use it its that simple. the australian government agreed to it which is fucked up. england cant just come to australia and drop bombs . thats because the aborigines out there are non applicable.

ireland scoops and bawls to england. australia is an independant member of the commonwealth england has no control over us. australia already stated that we can become a republic anytime we like but the simple question is why bother. we wont have anything different then we do now. england has no control over us or canada. however they rule ireland.

no australia never colonised east timor we freed east timor. east timor was a part of indonesia and australia got them there independence. we are soort of there protector now but we dont colonise east timor nor do we want too. australia fought against indonesia.

@AlienFirefox - "we gave east timor there independence from indonesia"....well thats intresting because as far as i know australia never colonised east timor........the truth is Aust supported the indonesian slaughter, Howard and Keating both supported suharto even though the indonesian goverment killed proportionately more east timorise then pol pot did in cambodia....they had a moral duty to support the people of East Timorese but did nothing...because the US did not want them to...

@AlienFirefox - "if australia goes to war america and england both come running to our aid"....but the whole point about aust and vietnam is that the US was not attacked..the US invaded vietnam for its own political reasons therefore SEATO did not come into the equation, this treaty only comes into effect if a signature to SEATO is attacked, since the US was not attacked and vietnam was not a signature to the said treaty there was no basis for aust involvement......

all except east timor were due to treaty if australia goes to war america and england both come running to our aid thats how it works. east timor was australias affair we are protectors of east timor we gave east timor there independence from indonesia. please get your facts straight before you speak and trust me ur in a far worse position as an irishman than i am as an aussie atleast im free with my own flag, identity and culture.
