voice is all wrong . .sure doesn't sound like a desperate wretched suicide case . . .sounds like he's never seen a wretched day in his life.

Quite possibly the greatest novelist ever. His insight into human nature is up there with Shakespeare. Albert Einstein once said: "Dostoevsky has given me more than any scientist..."

The only gain of civilization for mankind is the greater capacity for variety of sensations--and absolutely nothing more.

@occupiedusa Ugh. How disgraceful. I did not know that the Tea Party reads Dostoevsky now. Doesn't your book club consists of Atlas Shrugged and such.. This is not the proper forum for you sir. Dostoevsky was ready to face execution for his "liberal" belief. Your rant about universal health care falls on deaf ears.

Can you understand, how Dostoevsky there was the Russian military engineer explaining for all you some principles of philosophy of Russian soldier about priority of responsibility of man as an intellectual and spiritual creature?!

Gogol , Celine and Kafka have sense of humour

Why does everyone call it "Notes From The Underground" when there is clearly no "the" in the title? That's a total pet peeve of mine.
This is one of my favourite books. Does that website have many audiobooks? I like that narrator

Yes it has!
Visit the webpage. There is a wide range of audiobooks from essays to horror fiction, etc.
The quality is also diverse, there are some vrey good readings, but others with too much accent or background noise.
Nonetheless it is free and an execellent resource for learning.

I've always personally identified with Dostoevsky and his character-personas.

To me Dostoyevsky is an excellent writer and psychologist.
I enjoy very much and feel amazed every time he goes inside the mind of their characters.
Nietzsche was right :
"the only psychologist from whom I have something to learn: he belongs to the happiest windfalls of my life"
Im also fond of the other russians writer of the golden age: Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gogol, Pushkin, etc.
