Thailand's government has finally lifted martial law nationwide, except for troubled areas in the Muslim south. Let's see what people are saying about this recent development.

Martial law was enforced in much of the region since former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted in a bloodless 2006 coup.

Many Thai residents say martial law should have been lifted after the general election in December last year.

[Paitoon Suksuwan, Thai Resident]:
"It is the right thing to do and it is right to keep three provinces and five districts in the south under martial law."

[Patcharin Chinchumchon, Thai Resident]:
"It will be better to lift martial law nationwide. If they don't lift the law nationwide, they should not lift it anywhere at all."

[Tassanee Chanakitja, Thai Resident]:
"It is appropriate to lift the law because the country is back to normal."

The country's prime minister says martial law could be replaced with new security laws to tackle problems in each province.

For now, martial law will remain in three provinces of the rebellious Muslim south and five districts in Songkhla. More than 2,800 people in the region have been killed in secessionist violence since January 2004.
