Business dinner with Minister Dipuo Peters: Energy Efficiency in SA

http://www.nbi.org.za/
The National Business Initiative together with Minister Dipuo Peters convened a dialogue between business leaders and the Minister of Energy to discuss the role of business in partnership with government in the implementation of energy efficiency based on the experience of the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Accord and her interest to endorse its continuation.

The event sought to emphasise the role and urgency of energy efficiency implementation as a priority solution to meeting the immediate challenge of both energy security, energy price increases and carbon reduction. It created a platform to:

•Showcase the achievements and lessons learnt from the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Accord between business
and government;
•Provide an opportunity for Minister to share her vision and intentions to champion energy efficiency amongst other strategic priorities;
•Provide an opportunity for business response and engagement on promoting energy efficiency through collective action.

The International Energy Agency recently announced that up to two thirds of attempts to reduce global carbon emissions by 2030 will be reliant on energy efficiency. Coupled with the challenge of energy security, there is consensus among leading companies in South Africa that energy efficiency remains one of the initiatives to prioritise in addressing the increasing costs of electricity and fluctuating fuel price and in response to concerns about energy security and climate change. The Minister has recognised the substantial impact made by the Voluntary Energy Efficiency Accord between government and the private sector in South Africa. The Minister has indicated her desire for ongoing collaboration on energy efficiency with the private sector.
