El ttun ttun es una alargada caja de resonancia. Suele constar de seis cuerdas bien tensadas, dispuestas de arriba a abajo. En su parte anterior dispone de ventanas de diferente aspecto. Las cuerdas se golpean mediante un palo. Se marca el ritmo mediante el palo, llevando el bordón musical del roncón. Por lo tanto cumple dos funciones, ayudar rítmicamente a las melodías producidas por la txirula y establecer base armónica de dos notas, a modo de bajo permanente. Dicho bajo permanente suele ser la tónica y el dominante de la tonalidad melódica. Para variar dicha tonalidad, se dispone de un puente móvil que varía el tono de todas las cuerdas a la vez. Este tambor de cuerda ha recibido diferentes nombres en Euskal Herria. He aquí alguno de ellos: danburi, ttun ttun, soinu, rabete, salterio, tambourin.
