For centuries, farmers on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan have been lighting fires to clear land for crops.
But since the expansion of the country's palm oil plantations, the haze has become an international problem.
Neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia are both complaining about the increasing pollution from the fires.
Our correspondent Step Vaessen travelled to Riau on the island of Sumatra and filed this report.
am seeking permission from AlJazeeeraEnglish to use a small portion of this video for our educational video to do with world wide air pollution. Our usage amounts to 36 seconds. Our total programme runs over 80 hrs.

Of course, not one of them. Ahh, so that's the way how Malaysian describe others. I was Riau Resident once. We all know that palm oil plantation here are dominated by Malaysian and SIngaporean investor. So, How could I say ?? We are suffering already here (because of them), When all platation was organized by government back before 1997... We never experienced such haze. REAL TESTIMONY from Riau Residents.
