Police funeral tribute - INP Van Nieuwenhuysen

On December 4th 2007 at approximately 03:00 a.m., Belgian police officers INP Van Nieuwenhuysen Kitty and INP Vanstalle Peter answered a call for suspicious individuals. What they didn't know is that this was a homejacking in progress and that the suspects had already shot the resident of the house.
Upon arriving at the scene, without any warning, they received heavy full automatic machinegun fire from an AK-47. Officer Van Nieuwenhuysen was very professionally radioing for additional units when she was struck in the head by a round. She was killed instantly. Her partner, Vanstalle Peter, was struck in the stomach and lay heavily wounded.

By the time other units arrived at the scene the suspects had fled using a stolen vehicle. They remain at large until today.

Officer Van Nieuwenhuysen was only two months out of the academy. The day after the shooting she would have been 24.

On the 11th december 2007, officer Van Nieuwenhuysen was buried. The church holding 1200 people was to small for all the greaving from across the nation.

Officer Van Nieuwenhuysen received two medals for valour at her funeral.

Officer Vanstalle and the resident are currently recovering from their serious injuries.

UPDATE: On Saturday 19th January 2008 the Federal Police, supported by the Special Intervention Squadron arrested three suspect in the city of Chaleroi for the fatal shooting of INP Van Nieuwenhuysen. The suspects are Nouredin Cheikni and Hassan Iasir, both of Moroccan origin, and Galip Kurum, of Turkish origin. They all are know robbers who have in the past committed various serious crimes. Two of them where on probation from prison for armed robberies. They where identified by their DNA material recovered at the scene. After the facts they fled to their country of origin but they soon returned to their natural habitat, the criminal underworld of Chaleroi (Belgium).

UPDATE 12th April 2011: All three suspect where found guilty and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment. In Belgium however law says that after 1/3 of your sentence you can apply for early release. If early release is granted these killers can be released as soon as 2017 considering the facts occurred in 2007 and time spend in jail up to sentencing is calculated into the final sentence. All suspect where already on probation at the time that they killed officer Van Nieuwenhuysen.

In de buurt van Charleroi heeft de federale gerechtelijke politie zaterdagavond drie verdachten opgepakt in de moordzaak op agente Kitty Van Nieuwenhuysen (24). Nouredin Cheikni, Hassan Iasir en Galip Kurum zijn drie zware jongens, die bovendien nog niet zo gek lang vrijkwamen.Het gaatom een drietal dat stamde uit kringen van zware overvallers uit Charleroi: Nouredin Cheikni en Hassan Iasir, allebei van Noord-Afrikaanse afkomst en Galip Kurum, die van Turkse afkomst is.
