Tamil Tiger Rebels Lose Stronghold

Here is the latest update on the war between Tamil rebels and government troops in Sri Lanka. Military reports say the army has entered Kilinochchi, a town the Tamil Tigers have claimed as their capital.

STORY:
Sri Lanka's military has been closing in on Kilinochchi since September.

The military says the capture of two key rebel-held towns to the north and south have paved the way for the final push into the rebel stronghold.

It has been more ten years since government troops have been in Kilinochchi.

Reports say fighting was still going on in the area.

[Udaya Nanayakkara, Brigadier]:
"But there is still enemy pockets operating in that area and we are, the army troops are presently doing their level best to regain control of the complete area and no sooner we gain control of the Kilinochchi township we will let the people know."

The Sri Lankan military has vowed to defeat the Tamil Tigers this year. And if they are successful it would the end more than 25-years of separatist fighting in Sri Lanka.

Tiger is indigenous to south Asia. Lion was the official symbol of Aryan king named Vijaya, who invaded Sri Lanka in ancient times. In english, Singlese = Singhalam = singam = lion.
