i have 12 A GCSE grades, 4 A levels with grades B and A, and a National Diploma graded as a distinction so far, and i will get my degree when i have finished that

I remenber that people memorized the history of their own country in order to pass the exam, and that's sad. But the own educational system was responsible for that. In order to get into public colleges, there were national exams, which everybody took, and the top in the rank could get a scholarship. And that competition pushed students into not learning at all but just memorizing. It was normal to you not to remenber what you had learnt in the past years or even in the past months.

I agree with you at some points.
Students indeed do repeat facts, and do NOT learn anything at all.
I don't know where you're from, but I studied in Brazil at highschool (I'm at Sweden now), and I can asure you, that even in the best schools of the country there were many people that had high scores however were doing nothing but repeating facts.
The exams were set in a way that pushed the student to memorize formulas (for math, physics and chem.) and even facts of history and geography.
