Waiting Outside the Lines Ch. 8 {Part 1}

How it happened, Kat didn't really know. All she did know was that she was happy in a relationship with Mika. He'd asked her the night of Nick's first concert. He didn't make a show of it, didn't go over the top. He just asked her, while she snuggled against his side watching ESPN in her bed.

Mika was a good boyfriend. He didn't force physical affection on Kat. He didn't demand her time or keep her from her family. He didn't get mad when she didn't call him every night while she was on the road with Nick and his solo tour. Every morning she woke up to sweet texts from him, and she'd fall asleep after he told her he loved her.

She was happy.

"Kat," Nick called from the front of the bus. Kat pulled the curtain hiding her bunk aside and poked her head out. "Come and listen to this song, will you?"

"It's what, the third day of the tour and you're already writing more songs?" Kat grumbled as she slid from her home away from home. The cotton night shirt had slid up her stomach slightly, and she tugged it down over her silk pajama pants before plopping down on the couch of the front room.

"I'm a musician," Nick shrugged. "It's what I do."

"I'm waiting Mr. Musician."

Nick smiled at his younger sister, strumming a testing chord before beginning a slow, light tune. Kat leaned back into the cushion of the leather couch, grabbing one of the decorative pillows to hug it against her chest. "It's hard to believe...where we are now," Nick began.

It wasn't really a boring ballad or anything. It had a swing of sorts to it, and Nick's voice was very good with it. Even his falsetto was better than it has been in the past. And much like many of his other songs, there was an obvious emotional connection to it. He caught Kat watching with a little fascinated expression, and gave her a small grin with a wink.

"Do you like it?" he asked, setting his guitar to the side.

"I thought it was really good," said Kat, shifting to fold one of her legs beneath her on the couch. "Now, who is it about? I'm guessing Miley, but I don't understand what's happened lately for you to ask her to stay or anything."

"Well, the idea for the song's been in the back of my head for a while now. And I've just been thinking about how much we've been through. And when I asked her to stay and come on tour with me in Dallas, I saw that she was a little hesitant. I mentioned it to her that Selena was going to be joining us in the fifth city or so, to catch up and stuff. I know how much it hurt her that after we broke up I went to Selena not long after, but I love Miley. I was her to know that all that pain I caused her is over, if only she'd stay with me by my side."

"You always were the philosopher." Nick laughed. "But it really is a good song. Miley is coming out to the LA shows. She'll hear it then."

"I guess you're right," Nick said, moving to lay with his head on Kat's thigh. The Jonas sister plucked at the little curls atop his head. "So, how are you and Mika?"

"He's really sweet," Kat smiled. "He calls me every night and texts me all the time."

"He hasn't tried anything has he?" Nick asked.

"Nick, we're hundreds of miles apart. He can't exactly try anything."

""He could try to get you to send him pictures of yourself, or send you pictures of him. Trust me; I know all the crap that can go down."

"Are you speaking from personal experience?" Kat raised an eyebrow at her older brother.

"Of course not!"

"Well, you've sworn off premarital sex. Technically, sexting isn't against that."

"Katherine Mary Jonas," Nick said sternly, "I better not EVER catch wind that you are sexting or sending inappropriate pictures to Mika or any other boyfriend you have in the future, or I will most definitely take you over my knee and spank your butt until you're crying."

"You can't spank me," Kat pouted.

"Watch me."

"Only Mommy can!"

Nick's eyes snapped open. Kat's hands left his hair to slap over her mouth as she gasped. Nick sat up as if he'd been struck by lightning and whirled around to face his baby sister.

"Excuse me?"
