I believe "Kanun" is Arabic meaning "law" or "rule" (hence canon) that is also in Greek for "rule or measure". The kanun sets up the makam (scale or mode) by means of mandals (levers) adjusting the frequency of each note. Interestingly, Arabic or Egyptian kanuns have only 4(?) mandals per note whereas Turkish kanuns have at least 8, dividing notes into finer microtones.

yeah in Azerbaijani it is called qanun :) Azerbaijani is member of the Oghuz branch of the Turkic languages . azeri qardaşlara selamlar ..
