It makes me wish that the incredible Mr. Welles had done some sort of commentary. Not that it's necessary, but alas, you hardly ever get to hear that great voice these days!
It's true. And Welles, for the last part of his career could barely afford to film a couple burning logs. Since it was always "my way or the highway" with him, most of the money men told him to hit the road.
If you want to get a good insight into OW, try F For Fake -- low budget, but fascinating film.
I saw F For Fake, or at least, a slop print of it. It was hard to watch, as the budget kept impacting what would probably have been a brilliant film.
Welles was, I'm afraid to say, the last of that breed. It was always about the film - and his art. I'm not sure if I can think of anybody off hand who, these days, ever gets told to "hit the road".
