Student Steven Young produced this interview with his grandfather Dickie Young of Mamou as part of requirements for French 2202 at LSU. Mr. Young recounts in French his memories of the boucheries, or communal pig butcherings, that his family conducted with others when he was a boy.

  • Steven took some high school French and has heard it around family most of his life. He took four semesters of Cajun French at LSU. This was his fourth semester final project. Not bad for two years out, I'd say. He made a big effort to use his grandfather's expressions and accent, and I think he was very successful.

  • Cajuns are decedents of Acadians that used to live in Maritime areas which is the eastern part of Canada actually there are more people that speak French in Maine than they do in Louisiana and Acadians have a huge influence on the Quebec culture and French which like I said before is related to Cajun French

  • I think to understand the Cajun French u should study the French that is spoken in Canada cause Cajun is related to Quebec French and Acadian Maritime french you should even check out the chiac French too you'll be surprised and how much these are closely related to each other there even a Missouri French too that spoken crazy huh

  • I really enjoyed this video. Did you (Steven) grow up speaking French or learn it in school?
